Adapted from the March 03, 2023 on the anniversary of the Suiheisha Declaration by Hisabetsu Nikkei Alliance Project
Hisabetsu Nikkei, a term coined by Miho Kim in the early 2000s, refers to a group of diverse communities that are structurally subordinated by the dominant system of power that is "Japan" today.
We do not have a Nikkei existence aligned with our values of justice, equity and liberation for all people if harmony and genuinely balanced relations are not fully restored among all people who have a stake in "Japan."
This means we must fundamentally subvert, and ultimately deconstruct, the very system that is designed to maintain hierarchies among those whose existence is touched as, or by, any Nikkei force.
To that end, we recommit to a radical re-imagination of who we are, a relentlessly critical interrogation of "Japan" and its people.
We will build our shared experiences, bear witness to each other's struggles and challenges, and cultivate shared awareness, identity and analysis on our own terms, based on the truths of our own ancestors and by our own Indigenous, decolonial epistemology.
In so doing, we will honor the relevance and the very centrality of our voices, to help grow our participation in, and solidarity with, the broad-based global social movement for all forms of justice and liberation.
To create a broad Nikkei front aligned with this, we design NDT as a collaborative and supportive space to deconstruct Japan’s unique and distinct system of oppression that is the Tenno-sei or ‘imperial ideology,’ so as to understand the root causes of racialized and gendered injustice in Japan; and based on this shared critical systemic analysis of oppression, craft strategies for grassroots empowerment, unity and solidarity, and cultivate people’s own voices to shape the movement for collective liberation.
